Mysterious Ulleungdo Island
9/30/2004

For the Chuseok holiday, Melvin, Na-kyung, Tom Bishop, Tom Reardon, and I went to Ulleungdo.  We left Sunday morning (9/26) and came back Tuesday night.  The photo album pretty much explains what we did, but I have to add... the ferry ride there was HELL!  I had to try my hardest to think happy thoughts, or else I would have thrown up like many people on the ferry.  During the last 40 minutes of the 2 hour, 40 minute ride, I had to cover my nose with my pillow, so that I didn't throw up from the smell of other people throwing up!  I was so nauseous that I had to shut my eyes, afraid that viewing other people vomiting might make me do so, too.  Other than that... Ulleungdo was very nice.  We had initially planned on taking a boat ride around the island once we got there.  After coming off the ferry, there was no way anyone wanted to get back on the water.  So, we took a bus tour around the island, which also dropped us off on the north shore, where we were staying.  The hillside and the steep cliffs of Ulleungdo were beautiful, even if it made for long rides around the island.  The water was so clear and I could see what a great place it would be to visit during the summer.

During our whole trip, we saw a lot of foreigners, going and coming back on the same ferrys as ours.  I notice that a couple had www.adventurekorea.com t-shirts, so I looked it up.  Adventure Korea is a tour group geared towards foreigners living in Korea.  I found the itinerary of the group we saw at Ulleungdo.  Their trip was 270,000 won, and mine was less than 200,000.  Of course we didn't do as much as they did, but that's the trade off of not having to wake up at 6:30 am on your vacation.  Oh yes, and I even saw Glyn and Rafael walking along the road, when we were taking the bus back to the harbor.

I didn't write a lot about this trip, because I made quite a few comments on the Ulleungdo Photo Album.  I'm continuing to use the flash photo album.  Please let me know if the opening the album is painstakenly slow.  I can't change things if you don't tell me about it.
Here's more information about the Mysterious Island of Ulleungdo.  Hey, I didn't come up with that.
(Regarding the map below:  The harbor is #1, we stayed at #16, and hiked #17)
