Let's set it straight - Is the country Laos or Lao?
Here's the answer

This week...

What they're saying about me

"She's a nut! Not too sure how else to describe an "at-first-glance" seemingly quiet girl who dances like a chicken when she thinks no one else is looking, who likes to pass off her "made up" answer for fact, until you look at her and see her hopelessly trying not to crack a smile, who WITHOUT FAIL remembers to put a line of dental floss in her purse before she goes out (and isn't afraid to use it after dinner, thankfully NOT at the table!!).  I can always count on her to know the hottest hollywood gossip, and to dance till all hours of the morning with me."

"My co-worker just told me that there was a premiere for Bridget Jones 2 last night, just blocks from my work, and we missed it!  Hugh Grant, my beloved and the framework upon which my future husband is based, was just blocks away, breathing the same oxygen, and I missed it!  If I had a friend here who was as savvy with E-news as you are, this catastrophe would never have occurred!"

Guess what I heard...

Oh my god!! This donut is so good!  - Ras about a Krispy Kreme donut

Just because I've been drinking doesn't mean I can't start shit.  - Tom B.

You know what they say, if your burps smell like shit?  You've been eating shit. - Melvin

"I want to do! But what is paintball? There is no such word in dictionary." - Suwa, Japanese teacher

"I am now skipping church to see if I am going to win my bids!!!"  "YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA.....I won the felt tip pens!!!!!!!!  Yippeee...."who let the dogs out...arf, arf, arf, arf"...."let me hear you say Y..M..C..A"....oh yah, who's your daddy!!!" - Renee

"I was sitting in my office the other day and I suddenly got this horrible wrenching pain in my ankle.  It really felt like I got a type two sprain just from sitting there.  The strangest thing.  Too bad cause I saw that Richard Gere movie and I got some Swayzerific moves."  - I asked Tom R. if he was going to dance this weekend.

Other favorite quotes:

A gift is an offering.  A selfless act that adds something to someone's life.  Something that they need.

Have you ever walked by something and you just had this feeling that someone you knew would absolutely love it?

Faith is believing when there is no rational reason to believe.

Homer: "We Americans are England's children... I know we don't call as much as we should, or aren't as well behaved as our goody two shoes brother, Canada... who I should mention has never had a girlfriend... I'm just sayin'..."

Anything less than mad, passionate, extraordinary love is a waste of time. There are too many mediocre things in life, and love should not be one of them.

The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.

When your heart speaks, take good notes.

Travel has a way of stretching the mind. The stretch comes not from travel's immediate rewards, the inevitable myriad new sights, smells and sounds, but with experiencing firsthand how others do differently what we believed to be the right and only way.

It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.

Sometimes to see the light, you have to risk the dark.

Soraksan's Changing Leaves
10/17/2004

This time of year in Korea, the leaves are changing colors, and they're most beautiful in the mountains.  There are segments about this natural show in the news, and my students and their families are making trips out during the weekend to see the foliage.  This past Friday, Ras and I went to Sorak-san to check out the leaves.  He didn't work that day, and I worked at 3:30 pm, as I usually do.  I didn't have time to do a proper hike, but at least wanted to see how far along the leaves had changed.  On an express bus, it took 45 minutes to get to Sokcho, then another half hour up the mountain because there was a lot of traffic on the single road.  We saw students there on field trips, and quite a few Chinese tourists... and ended up helping some that were trying to use 10,000 won to pay for their 750 won bus fare.

We took the 1.1km cable car (7000 won round trip), then walked another 10 minutes to the summit of Gwongeumseong.  The sign at the top of the peak reads like this:

A legend tells the story of Gwongeumseong.  Two strong men, named Mr. Gwon and Mr. Gim, built a castle overnight to fight off enemies when a war broke out.  The castle was used as a refuge in 1254 (the 41st year of King Gojong's reign in the Korean dynasty) when Mongol troops invaded.  At the centre of Bonghwadae (peak), at the altitude of 850m above sea level, there is a mountain castle which is about 2.1km long.  Gwongeumseong has a good command of the scenery including Baekdudaegan, East Sea, and Sokcho city.

5 minutes from the peak, we came upon some kind of traditional ceremony.  I'm not really sure what it was for, but there was a cow's head as part of an offering.  Overall, the leaves are about 50% changed.  Another week or week and a half, and I think it'll be really beautiful in Soraksan.

Sokcho, and beyond that, the East Sea

The big Buddha down below, and the trail that leads to heundeulbawi (Tottering Rock)

I'm on top of the world!

I love Japanese Maple, at least that's what these look like.  I took some home to press.

World on Fire
10/14/2004

Instead of spending $150,000 to make her newest video, Sarah McLachlan spent $15 on "World on Fire" and donated the rest to charityWatch the video here. Does anyone remember when MC Hammer spent $1,000,000 on the video for "2 Legit 2 Quit"?  A very noble cause indeed, but will she ever make a "regular" video again?  Wouldn't it be hypocritical if she did?

"The clip cites numerous examples of how the money spent on one music video could be better spent on food, medicine, and education in third world countries. Take that Chingy, you selfish prick!" - Sterogum

Now, back to useless things that won't hellp the world.  How about a beer infused with caffeine, guarana, and ginseng for contemporary adults with a "highly social and fast-paced lifestyle?"  Well, there's obviously only one answer for that... Anheuser-Busch's new beer, B-to-the-E (BE)...yo!

BE to warm you up.  Today, Kangneung is the coldest city in Korea.  High of 15o C.
How about “a bizarre flash cartoon that mixes the real voices of George W. Bush and Gary Busey, ferrets, British indie pop, and pseudo-japanesery"?  All right, then!

Sports Day
10/13/2004

Recently, Kangneung Elementary School had a Sports Day, or "Field Day" as it was called when I was growing up.  Most of my elementary students are from that school, since it's located five minutes from my academy.  On my way to work, I stopped by and watched the last 30 minutes of their activites.  As you can see, the P.E. uniforms for this school is purple and white, which isn't as bad as another school, who wore fluorescent green.  It looked like they were having fun, but I wished the students here could play on real grass!

Kangneung Elementary Students

Lots of crappy toys for sale, but that's coming from a (sort of) grown up.  I guess an inaccurate, flimsy bow and arrow would be fun if you were a 10 year old boy.

One of my students carrying his chair and pom-pom back to his classroom.

A woman passes on the silkworm larvae, and buys cotton candy instead... good call!

Saturday night... I'm walking downtown and come upon this - a man so drunk, he hell asleep on the hood of his car.

I LOVE how the internet is so informative!  The latest buzz online is about a 60GB ipod, with photo capabilities!  I know it's not exciting to many, but for people who love to travel, it's the perfect backpacking accessory!  Think about it... the ability to listen to your entire music collection, which will help take your mind off the torturous bus ride from Bangkok to Phnom Phen (or something similar).  In addition, you're able to store thousands of your digital photos on on a compact device that will let you view the pictures on a 2-inch color screen.  (...and here's another picture of my drunk friends from The Warehouse...)

The 2-inch color screen is identical in size to other iPods, but will sport a higher resolution for photo viewing. However, the new device's real shining feature will be its video-out port, which will enable users to tote their photo galleries with them, ready to be plugged into any television for big-screen viewing.

Sources indicate that Apple will market the new photo iPod as being capable of storing 20,000 music tracks and 25,000 photos. As an added bonus for music fans, album artwork will be displayed on screen when it's available for a selected track.

Yo dogg! Thatz gonna be hella dope, when it drops!  Off da hook, fo sho!  (Sorry, I've got street cred to uphold.)  You can start building your own street cred at The Rap Dictionary.

Now I see... the triple triple
10/7/2004

The elusive triple triple.  It you've ever played Scrabble, then you have an idea of what I'm talking abouut.  I found this great flash video called CRAZIEST, which also happens to be the single highest scoring Scrabble word if used correctly - 311!!!  The video's great.  It was pretty entertaining, but at the end, I wondered if it was really a true story.

Today I went to the optometrist and got my eyes examined at the big eye glasses shop downtown - across from Jacob the Baker.  I love how very reasonable it is to get glasses in Korea.  The eye exams are free, but it's assumed that you'll buy glasses or contacts from the shop.  The exam itself was only 10 minutes, and my glasses were made in another 10!  The longest part of being at the shop, was drinking their free soda and coffee, and choosing a pair of frames.  Ras helped me pick out a pair and I think these might be my "intellectual" glasses.  It was quite a dent in the purse, but still cheaper than back home.  Free exam, 70,000 won frames, 70,000 won lenses (had to get thinner, more expensive lenses because my eyes are so bad), and 50,000 for two boxes of contacts.  I spent so much money that they gave me a 5,000 won gift certificate, and 10% off the total bill.  Ahh-saa!  My prescription changed half a point, but it was a pretty big difference.  The woman who worked there took off my old glasses and had me try on my new pair.  With the old glasses, it looked like she had a nice complexion.  After putting on the new pair, I could now see all the flaws she was trying to hide with her make-up.  (I intentionally brought my camera to take pictures of the experience, but was so excited while there, that I forgot to snap any shots!)

Jello Pudding pops
10/5/2004

Initially, I came to X-entertainment to read the article, "Spider Man Reviews Crayola Crayons", and I wasn't disappointed.  The writer's sense of humor is great.

You might think sitting under fake plants is my favorite pastime, but joke's on you...it's only my second. My favorite thing in the world is coloring.

Now this...this is green! In fact, it's called "Green!" It's grass, it's stems, it's everything you need it to be. It is heroic Jedi lightsaber number three.

Still, what caught my eye, was the feature about Jellow Pudding pops.  Remember those?  They were one of my favorite childhood ice creams, along with others, incluing Otter Pops.  I love how this site has great pictures to go with their features.  Take my hand, and walk with me down Nostalgic Road.

Tunnel Rat: Wuh oh. Houston, we have a problem. There's only two Pudding Pops left.

Donatello: So what? Why, were you planning on having two for yourself?

Tunnel Rat: It's not that. The only two left are a Chocolate & Vanilla Swirl, and a plain old regular shitty stupid nobody-wants-it piece of crap Vanilla. Who gets
the swirly??

(credit: X-Entertainment)

(after Donatello & Tunnel Rat toss "Big John Studd" to see who gets the Chocolate & Vanilla Swirl)

Donatello: Oh for the love of Christ. I can't believe I lost at my own patented specialty, the "Big John Studd Toss."

Tunnel Rat: Everybody has their off days. How's the vanilla, anyway?

Donatello: Actually, it's not so bad. Can't even tell much of a difference, really. I guess it just doesn't look as interesting, y'know?

I couldn't agree more that the chocolate & vanilla swirl was the best flavor.  There are only four of them in a box of twelve, so that meant my two brothers and I each got one.  With the last one, I would hide it in the back of the freezer, hoping that no one would notice it missing, only to eat it secretly when they were playing outside.  Yeah, I was sneaky.  Still am...

Last of all... Halloween is coming up.  Actually, it's 4 weeks away, but still...  It's a holiday where the sole purpose, is to get candy.  How could I not love it?  AND, I just got Renee's latest package to me.  It's a pumpin carving it!  I'll make one later this month, and post it.  I still have to decide what to be for Halloween.

Colder nights in Korea
10/4/2004

Korean automaker, Hyundai, rates #2 in value, behind Lexus!  Surprising!  Still, I'd rather own a mini cooper.  It's cute, sassy, and somehow reminds me of a Ford Woody Station Wagon.

Alicia Keys is coming to Korea on Wednesday, Oct. 13th.  I would have considered going to see her, but it's in the middle of the week.  She's playing at the Millenium Hall, which is right next to Gangnam Express Bus Terminal.  I wonder if she'll get a chance to walk outside and have some o-deng (boiled fish paste on a stick).  Actually, it tastes better than it sounds.

Well, this isn't good news... If North Korea were to attack South Korea, 1/3 of Seoul would be destroyed within an hour.  If the U.S. did not help with air support, Seoul would fall in less than 16 days.  Any sign of trouble, and I'd be on the first bus to Busan!

Want to see the two richest businessmen in Korea?  Of course, it's Samsung Group's chairman, and his son.  Maybe it's just me, but whenever I see pictures of super rich people, I wonder if they'd had plastic surgery.  Maybe because I'm being exposed to shows like The Swan, Nip/Tuck, and Extreme Makeover, that makes me a skeptic to naturally good looks.  The only one of the above shows worth watching is Nip/Tuck, which TV Guide says is "The coolest show on TV."

I've noticed it's been getting kind of cold lately, with lows in the 50's (14 oC).  I know that to some in Canada, that doesn't seem very cold, but I grew up in a moderate climate, and I'm the type of person that gets cold in the sun.  I really noticed it today when walking home, because my ears were cold.  There are not too many things that I LOVE about the colder weather, but one thing I do love, is getting a chance to use the heating pad on my bed.  I've never used one until I got to Korea, and let me tell you... it's FREAKIN' FANTASTIC!!!  That's right, 3 exclaimation points!  I love crawling into a pre-warm bed so much, that I almost every time I use it, I wish I were fat - really FAT.  That way, I'd have more skin to cover more of the bed, thus feeling more warmth.  Makes perfect sense, right?

Mysterious Ulleungdo Island
9/30/2004

For the Chuseok holiday, Melvin, Na-kyung, Tom Bishop, Tom Reardon, and I went to Ulleungdo.  We left Sunday morning (9/26) and came back Tuesday night.  The photo album pretty much explains what we did, but I have to add... the ferry ride there was HELL!  I had to try my hardest to think happy thoughts, or else I would have thrown up like many people on the ferry.  During the last 40 minutes of the 2 hour, 40 minute ride, I had to cover my nose with my pillow, so that I didn't throw up from the smell of other people throwing up!  I was so nauseous that I had to shut my eyes, afraid that viewing other people vomiting might make me do so, too.  Other than that... Ulleungdo was very nice.  We had initially planned on taking a boat ride around the island once we got there.  After coming off the ferry, there was no way anyone wanted to get back on the water.  So, we took a bus tour around the island, which also dropped us off on the north shore, where we were staying.  The hillside and the steep cliffs of Ulleungdo were beautiful, even if it made for long rides around the island.  The water was so clear and I could see what a great place it would be to visit during the summer.

During our whole trip, we saw a lot of foreigners, going and coming back on the same ferrys as ours.  I notice that a couple had www.adventurekorea.com t-shirts, so I looked it up.  Adventure Korea is a tour group geared towards foreigners living in Korea.  I found the itinerary of the group we saw at Ulleungdo.  Their trip was 270,000 won, and mine was less than 200,000.  Of course we didn't do as much as they did, but that's the trade off of not having to wake up at 6:30 am on your vacation.  Oh yes, and I even saw Glyn and Rafael walking along the road, when we were taking the bus back to the harbor.

I didn't write a lot about this trip, because I made quite a few comments on the Ulleungdo Photo Album.  I'm continuing to use the flash photo album.  Please let me know if the opening the album is painstakenly slow.  I can't change things if you don't tell me about it.
Here's more information about the Mysterious Island of Ulleungdo.  Hey, I didn't come up with that.
(Regarding the map below:  The harbor is #1, we stayed at #16, and hiked #17)

1000 words spoken
9/29/2004

The Digital Journalist.org has a page featuring some of the 100 Photographs that Changed the World, according to LIFE magazine.

Clarence Hailey Long, 1949 - Another Landmark Image

This is C.H. Long, a 39-year-old foreman at the JA ranch in the Texas panhandle, a place described as “320,000 acres of nothing much.” Once a week, Long would ride into town for a store-bought shave and a milk shake. Maybe he’d take in a movie if a western was playing. He said things like, “If it weren’t for a good horse, a woman would be the sweetest thing in the world.” He rolled his own smokes. When the cowboy’s face and story appeared in LIFE in 1949, advertising exec Leo Burnett had an inspiration. The company Philip Morris, which had introduced Marlboro as a woman’s cigarette in 1924, was seeking a new image for the brand, and the Marlboro Man based on Long boosted Marlboro to the top of the worldwide cigarette market.

Check out The Digital Journalist's other Feature Presentations.  Of the 7 or 8 galleries I got a chance to browse, I particularly liked:  Requim: by the Photographers Who Died in Vietnam and Indochina, Tibetan Hunger Strike, Getting Beyond the Headlines, and Afghan Child Labor.

Morning has broken
9/26/2004

Arrghh!  I hate smokers.  I don't mind them as people, because I know lots of people that smoke.  I don't think you could live in Korea and not be friends with a smoker.  I'm just annoyed because while we were all dancing at The Warehouse for Teariki's birthday, Philippe burns me with his cigarette butt.  Yeah it hurt... and I think it's going to leave a scar on my arm.  And no appology.

Here's the culprit, with his lackasaisical attitude, he's say somthing like this in response to last night (in his French Canadian accent): "What the fuuuck?"  Yeah, that would be the extent of the conversation.  If you know Philippe, that would be his catch phrase.  Don't get me wrong, I like Philippe, and he's my friend, but this isn't the first time he's burned something of mine.

By the way, the birthday party was great.  I'll write more later, but it's 7:10 am and I'm waiting for a ride to Donghae, then on to Ulleungdo for Chuseok.

What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
9/25/2004

R.E.M. and Dan Rather on The Late Show with David Letterman
This is a bizare event that only the 80's could produce!  Back in October 1986, Dan Rather was walking down a Manhattan street when he was punched from behind and thrown to the ground. His assailant kicked and beat him while repeating, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"  At the time, nobody could explain the bizarre event.  Finally in 1997, Dan Rather identified the man that beat him up.  "The CBS anchorman said his assailant was William Tager, now in prison for killing an NBC stagehand outside the Today show in 1994. Tager was convinced the media had him under surveillance and were beaming hostile messages to him, and he demanded that Rather tell him the frequency being used, according to a forensic psychiatrist who examined Tager after the NBC shooting."  Apparently, Tager was not stalking Rather, but accidentally encountered him.  It's straight out of Conspiracy Theory.  The attack inspired the 1994 R.E.M. hit
"What's the Frequency, Kenneth." [Listen]  Being a good sport, Dan Rather accompanied the band when they performed the song on Late Show with David Letterman.  Now, there's an
off-Broadway play about the incident.

After reading this, it made me curious about that Phil Collins song, in the Air Tonight.  I've heard for years that it's about Phil Collins watching his friend drown, as he helplessly watched from far away.  In addition, there was a man who could have rescued the friend, but just stood idly by.  Then, Phil writes a song about the experience and give the man a front row ticket to the show.  While he sings the song to him, the spotlight is on the man in the front row.  Sound familiar?

In reality, the song is actually about Phil Collin's bitterness and frustration over the marriage to his first wife, Andrea.  The lyrics were interpreted too literally, and the rumor has been circulating ever since.  Phil Collins even addressed this issue in 1997 when he was on VH1's Storytellers.

Eminem even referred to it in his song, "Stan".

So this is my cassette I'm sending you. I hope you hear it.
I'm in the car right now. I'm doing 90 on the freeway.
Hey Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, ya dare me to drive?
You know that song by Phil Collins from "In the Air Tonight"?
About that guy who could have saved that other guy from drowning?
But didn't? Then Phil saw it all then at his show he found him?
That's kinda how this is. You could have rescued me from drowning.
Now it's too late. I'm on a thousand downers now, I'm drowsy.

You want to know why barber shop poles have red and white stripes?

The symbolism of the barber pole goes back to the barber/surgeon of the Middle Ages. In addition to cutting hair, he'd pull teeth, let blood, use leeches, lance boils. He'd hang his bandages out to dry, and they'd blow in the wind and twist around red and white together.

If you needed dental work, enemas, or wound surgery during this time, the barber/surgeon was the man to visit. A pole painted red and white (to represent blood and bandages) was an advertisement to potential patients. By the 19th century, barbers began focusing on hair styling and snipping, leaving the ER work to the doctors. The distinctive striped pole remained however.

It's not quite as clear what the blue stripe of a
barber pole represents. One interpretation says the blue stands for veins. Marvey believes the blue stripe was added during the turn of the century as a patriotic gesture.

I just watched the trailer for Alexander.  I swear, sometimes Colin Farrell can sound like such an American.  "Conquer your fear, and I promise, you will conquer death!"  He sounded like some macho quarterback giving a pep talk to his team.

Alexander the Great, one of the greatest military intellects in history, conquered much of was what was then the civilized world. Taught by his tutor Aristotle to believe that the Greeks were the most advanced people in the world.  Alexander created a huge empire, encompassing Macedonia, Egypt, Syria, Persia and Asia Minor, but died drunk at the age of 33.

[On June 10th 323 BCE, Alexander the Great died. Historians such as Faure speculated that his death was caused by extreme consumption of alcohol during the celebrations after the defeat of Persia and India and died of a pancreatic ailment. Others wonder whether Alexander died due to fever from malaria inflicted from a mosquito bite (Theulé 56). Alexander's death is still a mystery.  richeast.org]
